New Supervisor: understanding of how does your unit

When you take as a new supervisor, or earlier, you want to get a good understanding of how things work in your drive unit-specific processes and how they fit the larger organization. Also you want to understand how people work together.

Several strategies will take you a long way to understand your unit and its operations:

? Meet with your predecessor
? Review documents
? Meet the supervisor
? Meet your employees
? Meet with customers and suppliers

As you can after being appointed a supervisor to meet with your predecessor for the work of the unit. Your predecessor will have a vast amount of information that will be useful to you to take control as the supervisor. Make use of it.

Use the following list of items to cover in your meeting with the supervisor:

? Organizational chart and other documents – review reporting relationships and workflow

? Organization Mission and objectives – review the strengths/weaknesses and accomplishments

? Personal Drive – review the strengths and weaknesses of employees

? Urgent need – review issues that require immediate attention

Before coming aboard as supervisor or in the early days as a supervisor, gather and examine as many of the following documents, as you can:

? Organizational Chart
? Procedure manuals
Emissions and policy guidelines ?
? time standards and quality
? Goals and objectives
? Production reports and statistics
? Studies on unit operations and performance

There is a good chance that it will be overwhelmed by the amount of material that is available. This means spending some time after hours or at the House of plowing through regular job information. Select the parts that you feel is necessary to review. Set the rest aside for a future date, if you feel that you still need to review them.

Once a supervisor, you will be responsible to see that your processes work effectively in the production of products and services. This requires a thorough understanding of the processes of the unit. How can intelligent decisions or even speak intelligently with your employees if you don't know how the processes work? Take the time to start on the ground in the processes of the unit.

Follow these steps in helping you understand the processes of your drive:

? Identify the processes of your unit
? Study documents that detailed the processes of units
? List the steps for each process
? Review processes with employees

Meet with the supervisor as soon as you become a supervisor, if not before, to find out which urgent needs may need attention, as soon as you take on the drive.

Get to know your employees. Become familiar with them — Discover their needs, interests and responsibilities.

Once you've had the chance to become familiar with the processes of the unit, you can think of some changes that have occurred to you. Perhaps in your interviews with employees, or even the supervisor, you have become aware of some changes in processes that increase quality and productivity of the unit.

It would be very tempting to join and start making changes. After all, most new supervisors you want to leave the sign and get noticed for the great things they do and the sooner the better. Unfortunately, there are some serious hidden pitfalls with this kind of thinking.

Some effort at the beginning of your new responsibility for supervision, it is possible to simplify the transition on yourself — and your employees and supervisor.
