Business Travelers Pack Pounds, Stress

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Raffi Manoukian spends three weeks out of every month on the road for work. And while he loves the challenge of his job, the schedule has taken its toll: The 37-year-old national sales manager for a Canadian gas- and oil-services company has gained 40 pounds over the past four years.

Brian Harkin for The Wall Street Journal Raffi Manoukian, shown at La Guardia Airport on Friday, travels for work three weeks out of every month.

"I'll grab a salad with every intention of just eating the salad on the plane," he says. But first-class upgrades come with all sorts of high-calorie goodies. "I have a problem saying 'no' to chocolate cake," says Mr. Manoukian, who often flies in and out of New York's La Guardia Airport.

Being a road warrior may be good for your career, but can be bad for your health. Too many restaurant meals, lack of sleep, inadequate exercise and the stress of the hectic schedule can harm the body beyond just putting on pounds, a review of multiple studies on road warriors has found.

A study by the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in April found that people who traveled most frequently for work were more prone to obesity than their counterparts who traveled more moderately.

Being a road warrior may be good for your career, but can be bad for your health. Dana Mattioli has details.

Based on the medical records of more than 13,000 workers, the odds of being obese were 92% higher for people traveling more than 21 days a month and 18% higher for people traveling between 14 and 20 days a month than their counterparts who travel between one and six days. Nontravelers were 33% more likely to be obese than light travelers, which could be explained by the fact that people in the nontravelers category include employees unfit or too ill for travel, says Andrew G. Rundle, one of the authors of the report, which was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Brian Harkin for The Wall Street Journal Raffi Manoukian in a New York taxi.

With obesity comes a host of other health risks, such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Extensive travelers also had higher diastolic blood pressure and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the "good cholesterol") than people who traveled less frequently, the study found.

Other research finds that business travelers are more prone to other health disorders. A 1999 study of the global staff of Washington D.C.-based World Bank Group, for example, found that nearly 75% of respondents indicated high or very high stress due to business travel.

Based on a review of several studies, people who travel extensively for business are:

• 92% more likely to be obese than counterparts who travel less frequently

• Have higher diastolic blood pressure

• Have lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (the 'good cholesterol')

• Reported having high or very high stress levels

• Experienced sleep deprivation, sleep disruption or insomnia

WSJ reporting

Any job comes with its share of stress, but the constant strain of feeling rushed, overwhelmed and under pressure can affect the whole body. Headaches, mood swings and muscle tightness are common symptoms of overload. Excessive stress can also interrupt how the body functions, causing gastro-intestinal problems, an irregular heartbeat and sleep issues.

Indeed, a survey conducted for Westin Hotels & Resorts of 505 business travelers found that 55% of frequent business travelers experienced sleep deprivation, and 22% experienced sleep disruption or insomnia. Road warriors who frequently cross time zones, schedule early-morning flights and entertain late in the evening are all likely to find themselves tossing and turning.

Exercise also suffers. At home, Mr. Manoukian exercises every day. But when traveling, he packs light to avoid checking luggage—and workout gear doesn't make the cut.

Some hotels are catering to business travelers who don't have the suitcase space for workout gear. Boutique hotel chain Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants offers free in-room yoga, Pilates and workout videos on its hotel room televisions. Guests can also request a workout basket with a yoga mat, resistance straps and other gear for use in their rooms.

"They don't have to pack clothes. They can do it in their underwear," says Niki Leondakis, president and chief operating officer of Kimpton. The hotel created the program after fielding complaints from guests who wanted to exercise but not lug around exercise gear, she says.

Westin is rolling out a program at all of its hotels in which guests can borrow New Balance sneakers and workout gear free of charge. (Each pair comes with a disposable insole to take the ick out of re-using shoes.) Guests can also download and print running maps for different properties on the hotel's website.

Some experienced business travelers have figured out how to work in a workout. Sally Murphy, 46, a senior district sales manager for biotechnology company Amgen Inc., always packs running shoes when traveling. She sometimes brings along resistance bands, a yoga mat and hand-held weights, she says.

Ms. Murphy, who lives in Noblesville, Ind., travels about two days a week for work, spending up to six hours in the car at a time. To avoid fast-food pit stops, she packs fruit, nuts, water and other healthy snacks in the car. "I'm not perfect, sometimes I'll get a bag of Cheetos," she adds.

Even the unhealthiest road warriors can be reformed. Kent Vandenberg, regional sales director for semiconductor company Entropic Communications Inc., has been a business traveler for decades and currently travels three days a week. In the past, he often scarfed down burgers and fries and sipped martinis with co-workers and clients several nights a week. Now, he often excuses himself from drinking events for yoga.

When Mr. Vandenberg turned 50, he began thinking more seriously about his health, he says. Today when he's on the road, the 56-year-old from New Hope, Pa., has a rotation of yoga studios he visits when in cities like Fort Lauderdale, Fla., San Diego, Boston and New Orleans.

At January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Mr. Vandenberg was the butt of jokes. "It's supposed to be the blowout party of the century, and I'm like 'Well, I'm going to go to yoga now,' " he says.

Labor Board Rulings Irk Business

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The National Labor Relations Board sided with unions in several cases involving rules for organizing and representing workers, further riling business groups as the board continues to push through decisions by year's end.

The board's three Democrats outvoted the group's sole Republican member in all three of the cases.

[LABOR] Associated Press A union supporter takes part in a rally in Cleveland last April.

In a case known as Specialty Healthcare, the board decided that the union could seek to organize a group that consists only of nursing assistants at a long-term care facility. That was a blow to the employer, which wanted to include other nonprofessional employees in the unit.

Employer groups had been concerned the board would use the health-care industry case to endorse the formation of "mini-bargaining units" in a range of industries, which they said would allow unions to target small groups of pro-union workers.

In their written decision, the board's majority suggested that while they were setting a new approach at many health-care facilities, they were simply clarifying longstanding policy in other industries. They said that if an employer thinks a union proposal improperly excludes some workers, the onus is on the employer to prove that the excluded workers share an "overwhelming community of interest" with workers in the proposed unit.

The board's lone Republican, Brian Hayes, dissented, and business groups said they feared the decision would set a precedent for other industries.

"It seems to be that the board is still going down the route of allowing micro-unions, which from a manufacturing and employer standpoint is going to hinder job creation and could disrupt production," said Joe Trauger, vice president of human resources policy for the National Association of Manufacturers trade group.

A second case, known as Lamons Gasket Co., involved "card check" elections in which employees sign cards to show their interest in joining a union. In its decision, the board said employees opposed to a union would no longer have the right to immediately challenge an employer's recognition of a card-check vote. Unions prefer the card-check method to secret-ballot elections.

In the third case, known at UGL-Unicco Service Co., the board bolstered the rights of incumbent unions when a company is sold. It said neither the new owner, nor employees nor rival unions can stage an immediate challenge to the union. Instead, they must give a "reasonable period" and "fair chance" for the union to prove its merits in collective bargaining.

Each of the decisions overturned rulings made in previous years when the board was controlled by Republican appointees, underscoring how the board's interpretation of labor law tends to flip depending on which party is controlling the White House.

Business groups, management lawyers and Republican lawmakers have accused President Barack Obama's board appointees of going further than what is typical for Democrats. They say the Obama board is overreaching to bolster unions and union-organizing at a time when union membership has dropped to just 6.9% of the private-sector work force.

"The one common theme throughout these cases is that they were decided in favor of keeping the unions in power and blocking the ability of employees to challenge whether or not the unions still enjoy majority status," U.S. Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President of Labor Randel Johnson said in an email.

Kimberly Freeman Brown, executive director of the union-advocacy group American Rights at Work, defended the NLRB, specifically in the Lamons Gasket case. She said the ruling was "nothing more than a return to a process for voluntary recognition that for years worked just fine for employers and employees alike."

The board's decisions were issued Tuesday but finalized before longtime board member Wilma Liebman's term expired as chairman Saturday. Mr. Obama, who appoints the members, named Democrat Mark Pearce—already a board member—as the new chairman over the weekend. Mr. Pearce hasn't disclosed specific plans but has defended board decisions by saying it was carrying out labor law and ensuring workers have an "unencumbered choice" to unionize.

With Ms. Liebman's departure, the five-seat board now has just three members, the minimum needed to make major new rules and issue case decisions. The board is set shrink to two when Democrat Craig Becker's term expires Dec. 31, unless Mr. Obama fills one or both of the vacancies before then.

Congressional Republicans and business groups have already signaled they will try to block any nominees, so the board is hurrying to make decisions by year's end.

Business School Applications Drop

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Thinking of applying to business school? Now may be a good time.

Applications for two-year, full-time M.B.A. programs that start this fall dropped an average of 9.9% from a year earlier, according to new data from the Graduate Management Admission Council, which administers the Graduate Management Admission Test. The decline marks the third year in a row that applications have fallen.

One-third of full-time M.B.A. programs reported drops of more than 10%, according to the survey, which included 649 M.B.A. and other business programs at 331 schools world-wide.

[BSCHOOL]

Historically, interest in graduate school has increased when the job market soured, but the prolonged uncertainty about future growth has discouraged some prospective M.B.A. applicants. This, despite the fact that some companies that have traditionally helped students pay their way through business school haven't altered their policies. Spokespeople at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Credit Suisse Group AG and Morgan Stanley said they aren't changing the amount they contribute to business-school tuition.

"They'll stay in their jobs until they see that there'll be a return on this investment," said Wendy Huber, associate director of admissions at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. "They want to know that recruiters will be waiting in line." Applications for Darden's full-time M.B.A. program fell "roughly 10%," Ms. Huber said.

Harvard Business School also wasn't immune. Applications for its full-time M.B.A. class entering this fall slid 4% to 9,134 from a year earlier, helping to boost the school's acceptance rate to 12% from 11%.

Part-time programs are struggling to attract students, too, with 46% reporting declines in application volume this year.

New York University's Stern School of Business had a 9.8% drop in applicants to its part-time program this year. "Most people who apply to that program are employed, and there are fewer working professionals these days," said Isser Gallogly, assistant dean of M.B.A. admissions. "People are not going to be applying to an M.B.A. program when they're trying to find a job," he said.

One bright spot for business education is specialized master's programs. Courses for management, accounting and finance all reported increased volume. Applications for these programs have risen in recent years as undergraduates have sought to beef up their credentials before hitting the job market.

Additional interest in the short, specialized programs comes as professional certification boards toughen entry requirements. For example, students wishing to become certified public accountants in certain states must now have 150 hours of college credit to qualify for the CPA exam, more than most get in an undergraduate program.

Bloomberg News Harvard Business School's Baker Library

Applications for the Master of Finance program at MIT Sloan School of Management rose 3% for students entering this fall. Applications had already soared to more than 940 for the class entering in fall 2010, nearly eight times when the program was first introduced in 2009.

A similar spike occurred at Temple University's Fox School of Business, which introduced a new Master of Accountancy this fall.

But even though M.B.A. application volume has slumped, most schools report the quality of candidates, based on their GMAT scores, undergraduate transcripts and work experience, is getting stronger. "You're not getting applications from those who aren't serious," said Dave Wilson, chief executive of GMAC.

He also sees some improvement on the horizon. The number of people taking the GMAT this year increased through the end of July, and historically test taking has been a leading indicator of higher application volume soon after.
