This Exam Really Matters

Now that my life is in full-swing study mode for my nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN), I have had little time to think about much else. I have officially moved to North Carolina with my fiancé and between practicing NCLEX questions, reviewing pharmacology, and continually applying and searching for new job postings, I have found little time to sit and reflect about my current job status.

The process of registering to take the NCLEX-RN was a lengthy one, involving fingerprinting, passport-style photos, transcripts paperwork, and lots of money. Each state has its own Board of Nursing so the time it takes to be authorized to take the NCLEX depends on the state where you’re applying to work. A couple weeks ago the only thing I could see on my Newsfeed on Facebook was the chatter between my nursing friends about when we would get our Authorization to Test (ATT), which is a document stating that we are legally eligible to take the NCLEX-RN. It was almost like a competition between who could get their ATT first, although it had nothing to do with us and everything to do with the Board of Nursing to which we applied. The first person to get their ATT was greeted by many notifications full of excited yet slightly jealous comments. Then the next few people started trickling in, telling the world they had their ATT. Finally, I received my ATT about two weeks ago, and that’s when it really sank in that I had to buckle down and get some serious studying in before my exam.

I have scheduled to take the NCLEX-RN on July 16, so every day until then is a countdown. Because this test is literally one of the most important tests of my life, I need to not only study and review content but also prepare myself mentally. The NCLEX-RN is a computer adapted test, meaning it learns from your responses, and the questions are formatted unlike any normal standardized test, showing that it will be easy to get mentally exhausted. In order to prepare for this I have been reviewing old class notes and taking hundreds of practice questions each day.

Now that most of my friends have already received their prized ATTs, it seems as if my Facebook is empty aside from the random status updates from those friends we barely know. There is no more chatter about taking the NCLEX-RN, no more grumbling about the anticipation of the ATT, and most surprisingly there is barely any complaining about NCLEX studying. The only answer to this could be that NCLEX studying actually wins the battle against Facebook stalking, as hard as it is to say. To all my friends out there probably not reading this because you’re studying for the NCLEX, all I have to say is you better have some good status updates after the NCLEX is over. After all the preparation, studying, and mental anguish we have endured in preparing to take the NCLEX, all I can hope for is to be able to type “NCLEX: Conquered” into my status box, and to actually mean it.
