Thanks, Mom and Dad

A week before my graduation ceremony, I started to write a brief speech for my parents and close friends who helped me reach this moment. Throughout my four years at college, these were people whom I looked up to as my personal mentors, teachers, and heroes. I edited my speech about a dozen times, and each time I couldn’t help but get tears in my eyes. Everyone needs positive leaders in their lives, especially students. We are the future of the world and I hope to be as hard-working as my parents.

I was able to smoothly deliver my speech at my graduation dinner, but I turned into a basket of tears halfway through. I hope other college graduates can relate to my gratitude when they read the following:

“It was about four years ago that the same people sitting here convinced me to go to Cal Poly. You might remember how reluctant I was. Part of me thought my parents just wanted me to go here so they could visit here for vacation. But after earning a degree, two minors, great internships, and my own WSJ picture, it was the best decision we made together. Most people say college was the most fun they ever had. Well, at moments I didn’t know if I was going to survive the endless projects and exams. I was usually stressing out, and without your confidence in me, I would not be as successful without you.

“Mom and Dad, I am intelligent, healthy, and happy because you raised me to be. I remember in elementary school you explained my college savings to me but I didn’t understand how important college was, and won’t fully appreciate it until the future. Although we were distanced apart these past four years, I’ve never been so close to you mentally and spiritually. This day is a celebration for not only me, but for everyone here as well. I hope to be successful and loving in the future as everyone here. You are my personal teachers and nurturers of my life. I will always look up to all of you for guidance. All I’ve ever wanted to do is make you proud. This is the moment we have worked so hard for. I love you so much. Thank you for everything.”
