AppId is over the quota

Upon my return to the U.S. from abroad, going through passport control provided a brief moment of reality. I stared blankly at the line on the customs form that read “occupation” and finally penciled in “student.” However, the truth was that although I had left still in the middle of graduation hype, feeling very much like a “student,” I was returning home feeling more and more “unemployed.”
I didn’t have much time to reflect on my new status, as only a few days later, I found myself making the drive from Chicago to Madison, Wis., to interview once more with a health-care software company called Epic Systems. Although I had not been offered the position I interviewed for two months prior, I had been invited back to interview for several other positions.
Unlike the chaos I felt interviewing previously in the midst of finals week, this time I felt eerily calm and comfortable moving through my itinerary. For someone who is naturally a little jittery in interviews, the ease and enjoyment of every conversation left me with a sense of belonging. After leaving with the belief that I completely resonated with the culture, I was left not only wondering if I would be receiving an offer, but whether the offer would be for the position I had wanted most.
Fortunately, one week later, I received a phone call from Epic offering me my top-choice position. It’s amazing how just one phone call put any incessant worrying, confidence questioning and feelings of ambiguity to a halt. As my life took a 180-degree turn towards the real world, I danced around my room, trying my best to hold onto the phone and learn the details of the offer.
Starting Aug 1, I will be calling Madison home. As a project manager for Epic Systems, I will be working with hospitals from start to finish on implementing health care information technology. This position is a wonderful opportunity to work in a young, fast-paced environment with a high level of independence, not to mention a fair amount of travel (which is perfect for an adventurous 21-year-old). Best of all, the ability to help improve patient care, create better processes and in general aid hospital systems is just the kind of feel-good work I was looking for at the beginning of my job search. Preparing to work every day on a beautiful and themed campus that is sure to leave any architecture buff or Indiana Jones fan speechless, I couldn’t be any more excited to begin this next chapter.
As August quickly approaches, I find myself and my friends moving rapidly toward adulthood (and not just because the Harry Potter series is over—although that helped). It’s an exciting time where I seem to learn every day of someone newly hired or accepted into graduate school. As for my friends still searching, I look forward to learning of the jobs they undoubtedly will secure. Meanwhile, I already am daydreaming of my future assignments, life with income and maybe even journeys back to Tar Heel Country.
In between researching health insurance plans and personal finance, I can’t help but wonder what else life has in store. Whatever comes next, this is for sure: It’s going to be Epic.
