Let's just get this out of the way now-I'm not a fan of public service. You see, in my book work Secrets Revealed I try to teach that there are no rules when you're applying for jobs.
This is not true in the public service. They have a rule for everything, including how to apply, what to say and how to say it.
The public service is not noted for his ability to reduce customer service costs, so if you want to work for them then you are in a battle. The fact is that they have "selection criteria" that you must meet. Generally there will be an address to write to get a list of these criteria.
Once you have this list, simply organize experience and skills that meet the criteria. Make it easier for the Department of personal writing down the individual policy as a header and then show how your skills match the criteria. You? King marked on how strictly the selection criteria is responding. Similarly, if you are shortlisted for an interview, your answers are similarly marked, and then plotted on a grid with the written application.
As you can see, the public service is a completely different animal to private enterprise. Customer service is not crucial here as it is private enterprise and the desire to make a profit or to save money is not strong.
What I'm trying to say is that the savings or profit ideas you may have that would really affect an employer in the private sector can be met with a yawn in the public sector.
With this in mind try to address the selection criteria as best you can. You might as well in competition with thousands of people to certain positions advertised.
When interviewees will be probably an interview panel about 3 people. (Private companies usually have one person doing the interview-starting to see what I mean on the public service, not wanting to save money?)
The fact is that the public service is regulated by rules that simply playing their game. Talk to some people the Department that you want to work in the Department. Have a chat with the staff and see what you're looking for and cite talking about them on the application (which is usually in the area of the vacant position.)
Also, to save time, check whether the position is vacant, many advertised positions are already filled? temporary? or? in quality? public officials who are put through a formalized process to have their position advertised? When you apply for the position that they may have acted for years so as to ensure fairness.
Unfortunately, you're pretty much on your own on this one. Prayer, crossing your fingers, networking and even dumb luck you can get the job. I would try to them all.
I'm going to leave here with a public service. But before you start thinking ", but has not yet told me what to do", let me say this: I don't have to. The selection criteria that will do for you.
If you are particularly adept at negotiating or lobbying for budget increases or more funds, who can help. Each Department would like to more money.
